How To Treat and Cover-up Under Eye Bags and Dark Circles

As we get older one thing most of us struggle with is our under eye area.  Whether it be dark circles, bags, puffiness, are all of the above.  It’s annoying to be told that you look tired even though you feel well rested. I have spent more time and money researching and trying out products that work then I can even count. Below I am going to share with you three tips to ensure that you always have a flawless under eye area.

  1. Start from the inside out. Water is your best friend so stay well hydrated.  The exact amount is individualized but it varies between 8 to 12 cups per day (I usually try to get at least 10 in).  Also watch your sodium intake.  I personally try to only eat out or get take out once a week if possible.  Restaurant food is loaded with salt and let me tell my under eyes are always super puffy the next day.
  2. Treat it.  Sticking with a skin care routine is important and that should include your under eye’s.  I use these Shiseido masks once a week at night, the retinol really helps brighten and smooth the area.  I use these from Tarte in the morning before I do my makeup whenever I my eyes feel tired and puffy.  They are great at hydrating and de-puffing the area.  It is also critical to use a really good eye cream both morning and night.  I am currently loving this one from Tata Harper, but also love this one from Kiehls, and this one from ROC which is an amazing drugstore alternative.
  3. Use The Right Makeup.  I would say that the #1 beauty item I buy is concealer.  I have been trying new products and doing trial and error for YEARS to figure out what works best for me.  This is what I have found has the best coverage without looking dry or cakey.

This is my before, I have some makeup on but absolutely nothing on my under eye.

First you always want start by applying your eye cream.

Once that sets in you are going to dab on Becca’s Undereye Brightening Corrector and pat it in with your damp Beautyblender.

Then you are going to generously apply Tarte’s Shape Tape Concealer and pat it into your skin with your Beautyblender until it is seamlessly blended in.

Then you are going to pick up a very small amount of Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage Concealer with your pointer finger and pat it into just the dark part of your “circle”.

Lastly pick up some of Laura Mercier’s Brightening Powder with your Beauty Blender and place it on top of the entire under eye area to set it and dust off excess with a brush.  I love it because it is not heavy and does not look dry or cakey.  (Her translucent powder works great too but is slightly heavier).

And that’s after, almost flawless.  All pictures are untouched and I haven’t used any filters (as you can see by the pimple on my forehead and my bedhead).

I also always use a damp Beauty Blender and pat, never rubbing my concealer in.  I hope this helps!
