Granny’s Red Velvet Cake Recipe

I always loved to bake, especially when I had the extra time to do so. Nowadays I don’t have much of that but my great grandmothers red velvet cake recipe is still a favorite of mine to make. It is just always a special recipe to bake. She passed when I was very little, but my grandmother and other family members use to make it all of the time. Then when I got married, I got the recipe and started making it myself. It is one of the few family recipes I have so it is always so special to make.

Recently my father told me his memories of it from when he was young. My great grandparents were living in Texas because my great grandfather was stationed there in the military. My great grandmother would take a bus to visit her family back in New Jersey, and the first thing she would do is make her ‘red cake’, which is what she would call it, for everyone. I told my dad that poor woman had to travel days on a bus then come and bake for you all haha. But he said that it was something she just loved to do and wouldn’t have it any other way it. It is so delicious, moist, and different so I wanted to share it with all of you. Here is Granny’s Red Velvet Cake Recipe.

Icing Recipe

  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 large tbsp. flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup butter

Mix flour and sugar and slowly add milk. Cook on medium heat and stir constantly until it thickens up. It takes about 15 minutes. Take off to completely cool and let butter soften to room temperature. When everything is the same temperature mix them together with vanilla until creamy.

Cake Recipe

  • 2/3 cups of shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/3 cup of red food coloring
  • 4 tsp. cocoa
  • 2 2/3 cups flour
  • 1 1/3 cups buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp. vinegar

Preheat oven at 350 degrees. Grease and flour 2 – 9″ cake pans.

Cream the butter and sugar together. Add the eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla. Mix the baking soda and vinegar together before adding to the batter. I usually mix the flour and cocoa together and add it slowly with the red dye. Divide batter between pans and bake for about 30 mins. Ice the cakes when cooled.

I hope you enjoy this red velvet cake recipe as much as I do. It is super easy to make and so delicious! Here is a link to my Snowball Cookie recipe which is another favorite of mine to bake.
