Today I am so excited to share our new “mudroom” with you! I had always wished we had a real mudroom to put all of our stuff when we walked in, but there was just no room. I was always so envious when I would see these spacious, beautiful mudrooms online. However the more and more I walked in and out of the garage, which is where we enter the house, I had the idea to turn the coat closet into a mudroom. It was just a small closet packed with coats we hardly wear, and it was transformed into a beautiful and functional space. A mini mudroom really. It is small but it is so helpful and it certainly keeps us organized. For anyone who’s recently downsized or relocated, finding space to keep all your possessions can be a challenge. Thankfully, cost-effective self storage units in Surrey are available, offering the perfect solution. Whether you need short-term storage while redecorating or a longer-term option, it provides flexibility and peace of mind.
I absolutely love doing projects around the house and I had this one on my list for a really long time. I am so happy to have it finally done and it is such a great accent to our home. Scroll down to read more and see the before pictures of my closet turned mudroom.
Closet Turned Mudroom
I wish I could tell you that this was a quick DIY project but it wasn’t for us. If you are handy like that I know it can be done because I searched turning a coat closet into a mudroom on Pinterest endlessly. There are posts on how to do it yourself step by step. It obviously is a ton of work but is doable if you like to DIY projects like that. We however had it done for us because we are not handy lol.
Our friend removed the door and opened up the space inside. We then had the actual mudroom custom built and installed by a cabinet maker so it looked like it was built right into the wall. And it does in fact look like something that was always there. I have to say that it came out exactly how I pictured it and I could not be happier with it. It is just so gorgeous and not to mention functional. We only enter and exit the house through the garage and this is right when we walk inside from there.
Now the boys can sit on the built in bench for me to put their shoes and coats on, instead of sitting on the floor. The baskets on the bottom are for shoes and things I want the boys to access themselves. Each boy has their own basket for their shoes, and then there is one for their hats and gloves. The baskets on the top are for extra storage items and things that we do not use everyday.
Choosing the Paint Colors
I had the hardest time deciding on paint colors for it. I really wanted to add a pop of color since I have so much white in our house. But since I couldn’t make up my mind we decided to just do a white coat of paint. Paint is always an easy fix so I figured down the road I could change things up a bit if I really wanted to. I found these gold hooks online and use them to put our everyday jackets and backpacks. I really wanted gold since I have a lot of gold accents in my kitchen it really helps tie things together. You walk right into my kitchen from this area so it helps keep things cohesive.
This mudroom has been a game changer honestly. It is one of my favorite things we have done to the house. It is so nice to have the extra storage space. . As soon as I walk in I have place to put my purse and coat. The boys can sit and get their coats and shoes on. It is a project I highly recommend. Especially if you have a spare closet by your front door and nowhere to put an actual room that is a mudroom.
